What is Subacromial Bursitis?

The subacromial bursa is a small fluid-filled sac that cushions the shoulder joint as your arm moves overhead. When it becomes irritated or inflamed usually from repetitive overhead movement, training load, or a direct knock to the shoulder it causes pain, swelling, and difficulty lifting or rotating the arm. It’s common in swimmers, throwing and racquet sport athletes, tradespeople working overhead, and anyone who’s recently increased upper body training load.

Symptoms

  • Pain lifting the arm overhead or reaching behind the back
  • Weakness when lifting or rotating the shoulder
  • A grinding or catching sensation with movement
  • Swelling or tenderness around the shoulder

How We Treat It at MyoActive

  • Assess — A full shoulder and shoulder-blade movement assessment to confirm what’s driving the irritation, since bursitis is often linked to how the shoulder blade and rotator cuff are working (or not) together.
  • Treat — Hands-on therapy to reduce pain and swelling early, paired with technique correction for whatever movement is aggravating it (training, work, sport).
  • Rebuild — A progressive strengthening plan for the rotator cuff and shoulder blade muscles, so the bursa stops being irritated by movements it previously couldn’t tolerate built to get you back overhead, not just pain-free at rest.

When to See Someone?

Most cases of subacromial bursitis improve well with the right hands-on treatment and a structured loading plan. If pain is severe, sudden, or not easing after a couple of weeks, it’s worth getting it properly assessed rather than pushing through it.
