What is Tennis Elbow?

Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis or epicondylalgia) is pain on the outside of the elbow caused by overload of the forearm extensor tendons where they attach to the lateral epicondyle. Despite the name, most people who develop tennis elbow have never picked up a racquet it’s common in anyone doing repetitive gripping, lifting, or wrist extension, including tradespeople, office workers, and gym-goers. Like most tendon conditions, it typically builds gradually and worsens with specific activities rather than appearing suddenly.

Symptoms

  • Pain or tenderness on the outside of the elbow
  • Pain that worsens with gripping, lifting, or twisting (e.g. opening jars, shaking hands)
  • Weakness in the forearm or grip
  • Aching that lingers after activity has stopped

How We Treat It at MyoActive

  • Assess — We identify what’s overloading the tendon — often a technique or strength issue in the forearm, shoulder, or upper back not just treat the painful spot at the elbow.
  • Treat — Manual therapy and dry needling to the forearm extensors, functional cupping to improve blood flow and reduce tension, easing symptoms early in the process.
  • Rebuild — A progressive strengthening program for the forearm and wrist extensors, since tendons need graded loading not rest alone to properly recover and stay recovered.

From Physiotherapy, Myotherapy and Remedial Massage to Pilates and a premium gym experience, everything you need for your elbow pain is under one roof.

When to See Someone?

Tennis elbow often gets written off as something that’ll settle with rest but rest alone rarely resolves it, since the tendon still hasn’t built the capacity to handle load again. If pain has been nagging for more than a few weeks, or keeps returning when you go back to the activity that caused it, it’s worth getting assessed and treated properly rather than cycling through rest-and-flare-up.
