Inside and outside the mouth, because the jaw works from both sides.

Many of the muscles that drive TMJ symptoms can only be reached from inside the mouth. That’s why our consultations include both external and internal hands-on treatment.

Outside the mouth

Hands-on treatment of the muscles and joints you can feel from the outside — the ones that tighten with clenching, stress and poor neck posture.

  • Masseter and temporalis soft-tissue release
  • TMJ joint mobilisation
  • Neck and upper-back treatment
  • Postural and breathing assessment

Inside the mouth

Gentle, gloved treatment of the deeper jaw muscles — including the pterygoids, which often can’t be reached any other way. Always explained first, always with your consent, and you stay in control throughout.

  • Intra-oral release of the pterygoid muscles
  • Floor-of-mouth and cheek muscle techniques
  • Guided jaw repositioning and control work
  • Comfortable for most people and optional, always.

Sixty minutes, four stages, nothing rushed.

Care led by an experienced TMJ-focused physiotherapist.

TMJ dysfunction rarely shows up as jaw pain alone.

TMJ disorder sits at the intersection of the jaw, the neck, breathing, stress and movement — which is why patients so often bounce between practitioners who each treat one piece of the puzzle.

At MyoActive, your TMJ consultation is led by a senior physiotherapist with focused experience in temporomandibular disorders, working as part of a multidisciplinary team and alongside your dentist or GP where needed. One practitioner, looking at the whole system.

Even one or two of these is worth a proper look — early assessment makes management simpler.

Clicking or popping

That click is usually the small disc inside your jaw joint slipping out of position and snapping back as you move. It's one of the most common TMJ signs, and while a painless click isn't always a problem on its own, a click that's getting louder, more frequent, or starting to come with pain or catching is your joint telling you the mechanics have changed. Assessing it early is far simpler than waiting for it to progress.

Jaw locking or catching

A jaw that momentarily sticks, hesitates, or needs a wiggle to get moving suggests the disc inside the joint isn't gliding the way it should. Some people notice it mid-yawn, others when biting into something thick. Even brief episodes matter, because locking that comes and goes can become locking that doesn't. This is one symptom we never recommend ignoring, and it's a key reason we measure your opening range and movement path at every visit.

Pain with chewing or yawning

If steak, crusty bread or a big yawn brings on an ache in front of your ear, through your cheek or into your temple, the muscles and joint that power your bite are likely working under strain. Many people quietly adapt by cutting foods out or chewing on one side, which often loads the other joint and creates a second problem. Treatment aims at the cause of the strain, not just the food list.

Morning jaw tension

Waking with a tight, tired or aching jaw is a classic sign that your muscles have been working all night while you slept. Overnight clenching and grinding can generate enormous force through the joint, and because it happens in your sleep, most people only discover it through morning symptoms, a partner hearing it, or a dentist spotting worn teeth. Identifying it is the first step, because daytime habits and stress patterns usually feed into it.

Ear fullness or ringing

The jaw joint sits directly in front of the ear canal and shares ligament and nerve connections with it. When the joint or surrounding muscles are irritated, it can create a blocked, full or ringing sensation in the ear, even though the ear itself is healthy. If your GP has checked your ears and found nothing, your jaw is the next logical place to look. This is one of the most commonly missed TMJ presentations we see.

Clenching or grinding

Clenching is often a stress response your body runs without asking you, at a desk, in traffic, or overnight. Over time it overworks the chewing muscles, compresses the joint and can drive headaches, tooth wear and neck tension. The good news is that clenching is a habit, and habits respond well to awareness training, targeted exercises and treatment of the muscles doing the overtime. Your dentist protects the teeth; we work on the system driving the clench.
